Sarah, an American theatre producer, arrives in the Greek island of Pharos, and embarks upon a summer of romance and magic. Asked to direct a performance of Shakespeare's timeless play The Tempest, Sarah juggles her stage production with some intriguing offstage romances of her own. In a timeless setting, amidst the beauty of the Greek islands and occasionally rocky seas, author Barbara Bonfigli's first novel Café Tempest: Adventures on a Small Greek Island - A Fictional Memoir is a triumph of storytelling, told with wit and a keen eye for local detail.

Barbara Bonfigli creates a magical world that seems to exist outside of time. In the tradition of Shakespears's The Tempest, the novel places magical elements into a near mythical setting. Vivid descriptions of the island and its many colourful characters, form the background to the novel. At the same time, these memorable and well drawn characters are as magical as any from the Shakespearian masterpiece. Casting the production of the classic play, with local people who somehow fit their roles as if they were born to play them, Sarah creates a wonderful world of magic within an island that borders on the mythical itself.

Barbara Bonfigli (photo left) weaves the story of the Sarah's stage production through a movable feast of Greek cuisine. The play within the novel becomes a mirror of the lives of the characters outside the play. Sarah, as play director, casts her characters from island residents, who could have been the exact role models for Shakespeare himself. The author's witty writing leaves just enough mystery, and creates just the right amount of magical transformation, that the island creates a parallel to Shakespeare's world.

In Shakespeare's world, a shipwreck begins that delightful adventure of love and and events that may or may not exist in any other world. Sarah is shipwrecked symbolically herself on Pharos, and the events of the story begin with what appears as everyday reality. The plot, however, moves gradually yet forcefully toward the sense that time and space have become distorted, and reality blends with a more fanciful existence. Romances become more complex as if caught in a storm at sea, despite Sarah's desire for more simplicity in her life. At the same time, the play itself generates its own almost surrealistic existence, sweeping the island residents along in its storm.

I highly recommend the delightful and magical novel Café Tempest: Adventures on a Small Greek Island - A Fictional Memoir by Barbara Bonfigli, to anyone seeking a romantic novel that features humorous writing and vivid descriptions of memorable characters and places. The novel is a beautiful layering of Shakespeare's magical comedy The Tempest onto a modern, if somewhat offbeat location. The author recognizes the power of love as redemption and to create magic all of its own.

Read the wonderful and romantic comedic novel Café Tempest: Adventures on a Small Greek Island - A Fictional Memoir by Barbara Bonfigli, and be swept away across time and place, to a fanciful world that time has forgotten. The story is a feast for the soul as well as for the imagination. As a bonus, the fantastic recipes appended to the book, add a taste of Greece that can be enjoyed over and over again. In the end, it's the memorable characters that will linger in your mind, as you sail the islands in your own dreams of Greece.

B.S.: Business Satire by John Auger and Jerry Serra - Book review

B.S.: Business Satire

Business Culture and How We Can Change It

By: Jerry Serra, John Auger

Published: September 2009
ISBN: 9781935557128
Format: Paperback, 114 pages
Publisher: Publishling Works Inc.

"It was astonishing to us that corporate America, founded and grown on the principles of having a good old fashioned work ethic, the courage to be entrepreneurial and the concern of the well being of their people had now been hijacked by narcissistic lemmings", write authors Jerry Serra and John Auger in their hilarious and spot on satire of modern corporations B.S.: Business Satire: Business Culture and How We Can Change It. The authors, with biting wit made all the more sharp by its very accuracy, lampoon the pretentiousness, self-importance, and copycat behavior that infests the modern corporate world.

Jerry Serra (photo left) and John Auger spent many years in the corporate world and witnessed countless absurdities first hand. Not only were the behaviors exhibited by corporate executives at all levels self aggrandizing, but were very often counterproductive to the needs of the company, its employees, and its customers. The authors depict the often outrageous actions of executives with humor, and with an eye to teach other business people to not follow the bad example set my these self important business leaders. As a management teaching tool, Jerry Serra and John Auger mix satire with hilarious illustrations and parody games to underline the bad management style demonstrated by many modern managers. The authors' technique is very effective.

John Auger (photo left) and Jerry Serra ridicule most of the modern corporate trappings, that the authors believe are more for the career aspirations of the manager, than for the overall benefit of the company. The authors parody the absurdity of job titles that bear little relationship to the job description. Indeed, the authors believe most corporate titles are designed to obscure incompetence and give the false impression of importance. The authors pillory the useless nature of most staff meetings, personal technology devices, and conference calls that are more about creating personal promotion than about solving any real problems.

For me, the power of the book is the serious management message underlying the satire and humor. The authors believe in elimination the contagious self aggrandizement behavior, and replacing it with a more human approach to business. Instead of looking out only for oneself and one's own career, John Auger and Jerry Serra suggest a more holistic approach to business and to life. Treating employees and customers with respect, while ending the dependence on useless meetings, conference calls, and team building exercises, will provide more benefit to the organization. A value based company will not only be more profitable and responsive to the needs of customers, but will provide a more balanced and happier life for all employees.

I highly recommend the hilarious and right on target book B.S.: Business Satire: Business Culture and How We Can Change It by John Auger and Jerry Serra, to any manager seeking to cast aside the silly and counterproductive trappings of the supposedly successful executive. The authors, with scalpel sharp wit, cut through the noise and clutter and demonstrate the absurdity of most executive actions. In their place, the authors suggest creating a more balanced work and home life, where managers have time to enjoy what is truly important in life. Instead of another worthless, time wasting meeting, the book points the way to a more rewarding family and business life.

Read the highly entertaining and insightful book B.S.: Business Satire: Business Culture and How We Can Change It by John Auger and Jerry Serra, and cast aside all of the silly and mindless delusions of grandeur that afflict many corporate executives. Instead of following their lead over the cliff, do the right thing by employees and customers. Your personal well being, and the bottom line of the company, will be better for it.

The Power of Women United by Tina Dezsi & Lia Bandola - Book review

The Power of Women United

By: Lia Bandola & Tina Dezsi

Published: April 2009
Format: Hardcover, 220 pages
ISBN-10: 0981939813
ISBN-13: 978-0981939810
Publisher: Ultimate Publishing House

"For the first time in history, more women than ever are achieving success on their own terms", write successful entrepreneurs Tina Dezsi and Lia Bandola, in their inspirational book The Power of Women United. The authors unite with twenty other dynamic women entrepreneurs, who share their powerful stories of overcoming obstacles, triumphing over adversity, and achieving success.

Tina Dezsi (photo left) and Lia Bandola present a powerful group of essays, by successful women entrepreneurs who did business their way, and won. The chapters cover all aspects of business from practical hands on management techniques to inspirational stories of turning tragedy into achievement. The stories describe how empowered women, through innovation and personal integrity, overcome societal expectations and live the business and personal lives of their dreams. Instead of playing by the rules set down by others, these powerful women created their own rules, and turned their personal aspirations into truly great companies.

Lia Bandola (photo left) and Tina Dezsi understand the importance of networking for generating success in female owned and managed companies. Through personal contacts, and sharing information and ideas with others, women are able to make huge strides toward creating and operating successful businesses. Women are natural networkers, and excel at developing personal relationships that create trust through authenticity and transparency. At the same time, these strong personal ties help create peer support for businesswomen to help one another through the inevitable rough patches that afflict every company. The sharing of ideas and assistance, along with personal support are the keys to success for these highly motivated women.

For me, the power of the book was the wide range of ideas and stories shared by a wonderful cross section of business women. The concepts range from management to assessing risk to to understanding technology in the workplace. More importantly, the essays carry powerful messages of building confidence, leadership skills, and helping other business people reach their goals. The twenty-two stories reflect different businesses and different personalities, but they all share an underlying message of hope and strong self esteem. Because of the inspirational quality of the business narratives, the reader takes away a sense of personal empowerment, and an understanding that no challenge is too great to be met and conquered.

I highly recommend the powerful and intensely personal anthology The Power of Women United by Tina Dezsi and Lia Bandola, to any business women seeking to understand their own potential for empowerment and success. The message that runs through all of the stories is one of hope, inspiration, and personal achievement. Another important thread woven in the essays is one of peer support, networking, and helping others through sharing of ideas and genuine empathy.

Read the empowering The Power of Women United by Tina Dezsi and Lia Bandola, and discover how this group of incredible women found business and personal success on their own terms. Rather than play pre-ordained societal roles, they created their own reality, and succeeded. At the same time, they shared their expertise generously with other women entrepreneurs, multiplying their success many times over. The book is their story, and tells of their triumphs and achievement, regardless of the odds against them.

Emotionomics by Dan Hill - Book review

Emotionomics

Leveraging Emotions for Business Success (Revised Edition)

By: Dan Hill

Published: January 2009
ISBN-13: 9780749453992
Format: Hardcover, 345pp
Publisher: Kogan Page Publishers

"Breakthroughs in brain science have revealed that people are primarily emotional decision makers". writes President of Sensory Logic Dan Hill, in his seminal book on the crucial and central role that emotions play in the decision making process, Emotionomics: Leveraging Emotions for Business Success (Revised Edition). The author describes how identifying the significance of the role emotions play, in both the marketplace and the workplace, will result in more satisfying relationships between all stakeholders.

Dan Hill recognizes the disconnect between the professed rational reasons for making a decision, and the deeper emotional forces that were the real cause of the choice. The author considers the rational ideas to be made after the fact to justify the decision made on an emotional level. Dan Hill's primary purpose for writing the book, is to apply the principles of emotional decision making, to creating business opportunities. He establishes the scientific basis for the primacy of emotions in driving a person's motivations. On a tactical level, Dan Hill recommends a system of facial coding, that the author describes as both reliable for understanding people, and measurable in terms of repeatable empirical data.

Dan Hill (photo left) points out that understanding emotions, and how they are coded in facial expression, is beneficial for everyone involved in personal interaction. People very often hide their true desires, and settle for lees than needed in the transaction. Not only does a clearer recognition of what a customer or employee truly emerge, but having satisfied those unspoken emotional needs creates more satisfied customers and a happier workforce. In a marketplace where product differentiation is crucial for business success, discovering how to tap into the vital importance of emotions can uncover a wealth of customer information. In the workplace, identifying employee needs and desires can create a more positive and productive work environment.

For me, the power of the book is Dan Hill's insights into matching the advanced science of brain study to the emotional responses of customers and employees. The author provides an in depth analysis of the latest in scientific and psychological research and applies them effectively to his new field of Emotionomics. The pioneering work in facial coding develops a usable and measurable hands on tool that can be used in a variety of customer and employee situations. The entire book is based on the sound premise that customers and employees need an emotional buy in for any purchasing decision or successful project execution. The extensive use of graphics and illustrations, to enhance the concepts, make the book even stronger for the reader.

I highly recommend the revolutionary book Emotionomics: Leveraging Emotions for Business Success (Revised Edition) by Dan Hill, to anyone who seeks a deeper understanding of the central role that emotions play in the decision making process. The research and proven techniques presented in the book can be applied by business leaders to create a powerful competitive advantage in any industry.

Read the landmark book Emotionomics: Leveraging Emotions for Business Success (Revised Edition) by Dan Hill, and discover how to put the power of leveraging emotions to work in your organization. Your competitors will never know what hit them.

The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work by Alain De Botton - Book review

The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work

By: Alain De Botton

Published: June 2, 2009
Format: Hardcover, 336 pages
ISBN: 978-0-7710-2603-4
Publisher: McClelland & Stewart

"However powerful out technology and complex our corporations, the most remarkable feature of our modern working world may in the end be eternal, consisting in an aspect of our mentalities: in the widely held belief that our work should make us happy", writes best selling author Alain De Botton in his thought provoking philosophical examination of the world of work The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work. The author examines what is often a disconnect between meaningful work in a person's life, and the impersonal structure of many modern business organizations.

Alain De Botton, in a series of interrelated essays, compares and contrasts what he considers the deeper meaning derived by the artist and artisan, with that of the corporate employee. At the same time, the author recognizes the symbolism of the results of the corporate world, in providing a sense of art in their own right. In the contemporary corporation, that artistic impulse is expressed in products and services that are beautiful in their own right. On the other hand, the author notes that products are often marketed that fill what he sees as the empty void resulting from the alienating effect of society. That disconnect is expressed in the relationship people feel toward their often self defining jobs, and their loss of personal satisfaction with their work.

Alain De Botton (photo left) expresses a rather pessimistic view of employment in the Western world today. He laments the loss of the sense of the personal as expressed by craftspeople and artists. That inner directed work exists, for the author, only on the fringes of society. The corporate output of products, while often artistic in design, ultimately fail to endure like those of the artist or artisan. At the same time, the author points out that work was not always accorded a sense of dignity. The pre-modern view that work was either servitude or a penance for the sinful nature of humanity, and would lead to personal degradation. As a result, the modern outlook that paid employment and personal satisfaction were intimately entwined, became part of the Western thought.

For me, the power of the book is despite the author's clear eyed understanding, that the promise of personal satisfaction resulting from work, has failed to live up to its promise. Products are designed to fill the empty voids created by societal alienation, as an artificial and temporary reprieve. People fail to achieve their true potential due to the structure of modern employment. The author suggests a more humanizing approach to the world of work, that emphasizes the potential of the employees. To create more satisfying work, the organization must develop more human based opportunities to express the innate artistic impulse in people. The result will be a reconnect between meaning and work at the deepest personal level.

I highly recommend the idea challenging book The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work by Alain De Botton, to anyone seeking to understand the deeper meaning of employment in the modern world. The ideas presented will cause the reader to rethink previously held ideas about the relationship between work and human potential. As a result, the author pulls no punches in describing how the promise of meaningful work, has not been fulfilled. That analysis throws down the gauntlet as a challenge to reorganize work to achieve that objective.

Read the moving examination of employment The Pleasures and Sorrows of Work by Alain De Botton, and develop a deeper understanding of the importance of work in people's lives. As a result, the reader will can accept the challenge to create a more personally meaningful workplace, that takes human needs seriously as part of the company mission. Your organization will become stronger and more humanized when you restore balance to the job.
